Grain-Free Nutrition for Healthy Chinchillas

Chinchillas are herbivores with specialised digestive systems adapted to processing fibrous plant material.

A suitable chinchilla diet should contain plenty of good-quality hay, supplemented with an appropriate concentrated feed.

Versele-Laga Nature Food Chinchilla 700g provides a mixture of grasses, herbs, vegetables and other selected plant ingredients without cereal grains.

The grain-free recipe contains 21% timothy, grasses and herbs, together with green peas, carrots, red peppers and other plant-based ingredients.

This combination provides dietary variety while helping meet daily nutritional requirements.

Although the formula contains no added sugars, it naturally contains some fruit and seed ingredients. It is important to monitor portions carefully, particularly because chinchillas can be sensitive to excessive sugars and fats.

Supports Healthy Digestion with Natural Prebiotics

A chinchilla’s digestive system relies on a consistent supply of fibre to maintain normal gastrointestinal movement.

Versele-Laga Nature Food Chinchilla 700g contains 16% crude fibre, providing important roughage as part of a balanced diet.

The formula also contains two types of prebiotics:

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS)

These prebiotic fibres help nourish beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract.

Mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS)

MOS are included to support a balanced intestinal environment and normal digestive function.

Together, these ingredients complement the fibre provided by hay and other appropriate plant-based foods.

For pets requiring additional digestive support under veterinary guidance, Keen Pets stocks Protexin Soluble, a multi-strain probiotic supplement with feeding instructions for rodents.

Always consult a veterinarian if your chinchilla develops digestive symptoms or experiences a noticeable change in appetite or droppings.

Fibre and Dental Health

Chinchillas have continuously growing teeth that require prolonged chewing to maintain normal wear.

While Versele-Laga Nature Food Chinchilla 700g contains fibrous plant ingredients, concentrated food should never replace the long-stem fibre found in good-quality grass hay.

Hay encourages natural chewing movements and helps maintain normal dental wear.

To complement this food, add Little One Mountain Hay 400g to your chinchilla’s daily feeding routine.

This naturally grown mountain grass hay contains 29.2% crude fibre and can be offered without restriction.

Providing unlimited hay is essential for normal digestion, dental health and natural foraging behaviour.

Natural Ingredients and Feeding Variety

Chinchillas are naturally active animals that spend considerable time grazing and foraging.

Versele-Laga Nature Food Chinchilla 700g offers a combination of extruded pieces, grasses, vegetables and other ingredients with different flavours and textures.

These textures encourage food exploration and natural feeding behaviour.

The recipe includes:

• Timothy grass and other grasses.
• Natural herbs.
• Green peas.
• Carrots.
• Red peppers.
• Selected fruit ingredients.
• Seeds.
• Vegetable protein sources.
• Added vitamins and minerals.

Some chinchillas selectively eat their favourite pieces from mixed feeds. Monitor food consumption to ensure that your pet is not consistently leaving important parts of its ration behind.

For chinchillas prone to selective feeding, a uniform grass-based pellet may be preferable.

Feeding Guidelines for Versele-Laga Nature Food Chinchilla 700g

Manufacturer’s recommended daily feeding amount: 35–45g per chinchilla, depending on size.

This is the manufacturer’s guidance for the product. Individual feeding requirements may differ according to age, weight, activity and health.

Independent chinchilla welfare guidance generally recommends smaller measured quantities of concentrated feed, with unlimited hay forming the majority of the daily diet.

Recommended Daily Feeding Routine

1. Unlimited grass hay

Always provide unrestricted access to clean, dry, good-quality grass hay.

Hay should form the majority of your chinchilla’s diet.

2. Measured chinchilla food

Offer an appropriate portion of Versele-Laga Nature Food Chinchilla 700g according to your pet’s individual requirements.

Monitor your chinchilla’s weight and ensure that concentrated feed does not reduce hay consumption.

3. Fresh drinking water

Provide clean drinking water at all times. Check drinking bottles daily for blockages and leaks.

4. Avoid excessive treats

Chinchillas are sensitive to high-sugar and high-fat foods. Avoid excessive fruit, nuts, seeds and unsuitable treats.

5. Gradual food transitions

Introduce new food gradually over approximately 7–10 days, mixing increasing amounts with the existing diet.

6. Monitor appetite and droppings

Watch for changes in eating habits, body condition and droppings.

A chinchilla that stops eating or producing droppings requires urgent veterinary attention.

Alternative Chinchilla Foods at Keen Pets

Looking for another feeding option?

Keen Pets also stocks Little One Feed for Chinchillas 900g, a complete mixed chinchilla food containing meadow grasses, herbs, grains and selected plant ingredients.

Another option is AVI Delights Chinchilla 1kg, a locally manufactured small-animal feed.

These products differ in composition, so compare their ingredients and nutritional analysis before changing your chinchilla’s diet.

Maintaining a Clean and Healthy Chinchilla Environment

Healthy chinchillas need more than suitable nutrition. Clean housing, appropriate exercise and regular dust baths are also important.

Provide a spacious enclosure with suitable resting platforms, hiding spaces and a cool, well-ventilated environment.

Chinchillas have exceptionally dense fur and need appropriate chinchilla bathing dust to help maintain coat condition. They should not be bathed in water.

Regularly remove soiled bedding and clean feeding bowls and drinking containers.

For cleaning suitable enclosure surfaces and equipment, consider F10 SC Vet Disinfectant, available from Keen Pets.

Always remove your chinchilla before disinfecting and follow the manufacturer’s application instructions.

Allow treated surfaces to dry before returning your pet.
